I’m not a huge fan of Valentine’s Day because I feel it is overated and every day can be treated as something special. However, I still needed to show my appreciation to my lovely wife by spending quality time with her. I had wanted to go have dinner at Ruth’s Chris because I felt I wanted to treat both of us to a nice steak and lobster dinner. Alas, since I did not plan ahead to make reservations, it was fully booked. No presents were bought either. Given a particular budget, I became inspired to do a Valentine’s Day activity instead. In the end, I decided we can spend a day doing something we were both unfamiliar with and something we can do together. Best of all, it will help along decorating our place making it feel more vibrant with life and color.
We spent the afternoon first going to the crafts store Michael’s to pick up several stretched canvases and assorted acrylic paint and brushes. In all, we spent just under $100.00 on the canvas pieces, paint brushes, palette, and assorted paints. Not bad for a unique Valentine’s Day experience, memories to last forever and value to our home. Remember, we are both amateurs and brand new to this form of art. Here is the result of our Valentine’s Day activity.

My wife's first attempt with painting on canvas with a brush. It is actually quite abstract and very nice. Quite colorful and the bold center design adds a striking boldness to bring it together.

My wife's second attempt with my input; she created the background swirls of color and I helped with the center image of a phoenix bird type or flower.

My creation of creating a two piece artwork using a light shade of purple and orange. Up to your interpretation.
What did you do with your significant other for Valentine’s Day? I hope our activity inspires you and your significant other. Be creative, get out of the norm and comfort zone and try something typically reserved for artists.
