I miss the days actually excited to go to my mailbox and see the famous Netflix envelopes. I would already know what movie is arriving and that is the reason I chose Netflix over Blockbuster.
Unfortunately, these days, the movies arriving in the Netflix envelope is not exactly on my top ten list of movies. Movies in my top ten are usually new releases in Blu-ray format.
That’s why I pay that extra $1 or $2 to get Blu-ray. It is such disappointment now because either Netflix has a short supply of actual discs available to ship out or they are holding back on new releases.
My top 10 list (its more like top 20 movies) I would like to see that are new release and in Blu-ray have been sitting in my queue since last year with a “Long Wait” status. Even the “Short Wait” status movies are not arriving as quickly as before.
Decision to Downgrade

So I made the decision, to not cancel Netflix but to downgrade my account from the 3 disc to the most basic single disc with unlimited streaming for $9.99 a month.
The reason? I’m not getting the 3 movies I actually want and most of the time I am just streaming. Netflix has been so focused on changing its business platform from DVD/Blu-ray rental to streaming content.
It’s nice but content selection is still sparse. I do hope they will either provide better service for their disc service where the queue wait time is shorter or have a more complete selection of streaming movies and television shows.
At this point, I’m not quite ready to cancel Netflix but if once I’m done watching most shows or movies; there’s not point. Especially if some of the shows are available at Hulu, YouTube or network television sites.
I’m little disappointed with (considering dropping) NETFLIX as well. Not primarily because of the evergrowing prices and the scarce selection but because of two other reasons which are more online focused:
1. Silverlight – It’s a monopoly platform, not all browsers run it and NETFLIX servers can’t handle it. If within a year or so they don’t drop it and switch to a HTML5 video platform. I’m saying goodbye.
2. Physical Media – I prefer streaming anything I can. I think hard-medias (i.e. dics of any format, books etc..) are a waste of money, resources & time today. I want any new release to be stream-ready as soon as it comes out on any other format. Why shouldn’t it be?
I had a similar problem with a well known web design ONLINE magazine / publication which publishes it’s own books. They didn’t want to add an eBook option because: “it would diminish the value of the printed work of art…” After laying out my arguments for how much more functional an eBook than a printed is, especially for a web designer, I hoped to at least get a response along the lines “We will consider it for future publications…” Nope, they stuck to their guns and didn’t want to hear about how they are wrong. I deleted the bookmark, unsubscribed & removed the cookies from the website – never to return.
Same thing with NETFLIX… and the world in general. We are so well trained to just shrug it of and say “Yeah it sucks, but there’s nothing else out there. So I’ll just slurp it up! ENOUGH! Time for revolution is now! If your NETFLIX does not do what you want it to do, don’t pay for it, if your job does not make you happy than quit! If your government does not represent you, abolish it… etc..
We can’t expect the world to change if we keep just blindly supporting anything and compromising what was promised to us!
Peace,
Wow. You struck a lot of valid points here and I must agree. I still subscribe to Netflix, it has some good shows, documentaries and indie films that I like. Blockbuster movie selection is slim via streaming and the disc process takes too long with that almost 30 day wait grace period.
I like the idea of streaming everything but sometimes, I still prefer holding a book in hand or flipping through a magazine. I’ll agree though, there’s a lot of junk and wasted resources out there.
Your final thought is a powerful one… especially about the government. On bad days, I feel that as well. Thanks for commenting.
